The outdoor installation challenge of variable speed drives

Back to Latest News

Today, variable speed drives (VSD) are being applied in an increasing number of installations to minimize energy consumption, while ensuring accurate flow rates.

Outdoor Installation of VSDs – The Challenge

In many cases pumps and cooling towers are installed outdoors, presenting several installation challenges. Given the limited number of enclosure ratings available for variable frequency drives, for years it has been common practice to install variable frequency drives in panels and design these panels according to the harshness of the environment. This is a field-proven practice, but can add significant cost to the installation.

Danfoss VLT FC102 Drive – The Solution

The robust Danfoss VLT® FC102 HVAC Drive is the perfect response to these challenges, offering problem-free operation in harsh environments.

Enclosures are available up to IP 66 (depending on the model) and a special coating is available as an option to provide extra protection for circuit boards, which significantly reduces the need to mount the drive into a separate electrical panel.

Below is a sample diagram and photo of a Danfoss design for a weather shield for the VSDs, which is highly recommended when installing VSDs outdoors, including IP54 / IP55 / IP66.
